Catalysing Rainforest Restoration in Madagascar: Andasibe-Mantadia Corridor
In essence, the proposed project aims to restore degraded land in conjunction with local people, in order to ensure the viability of the livelihoods of both people and the rest of Madagascar’s unique but threatened biodiversity. This will involve catalysing regeneration of rainforest, and enhancing the value of fallow land. A site of particular biological richness, under tremendous human pressure has been selected to pilot an approach which can then be applied on a wide scale.

Forest Landscape Restoration – Initiatives in Ethiopia
When forest resources are used irrationally, the physical environment becomes hostile to productivity of the resource base and results in poor harvests of industrial raw materials and direct consumptive food. This is more so especially when poor economic base, short-sighted development strategies and non-accommodative population growth challenge the rate of reforestation simultaneously. Conceptually, the negation of each factor results in contra-negative outcome. The challenge is no longer to simply increase the number of hectares of forest cover, but to restore the full suite of forest goods, services and processes.

Forest Restoration on Jamaica: A Community-Based Project
Restoration of degraded habitats to forest cover is recognised in the National Forest Management and Conservation Plan (2001) as an important conservation tool for managing and enhancing Jamaica’s native forest resources, for improving the condition of her watersheds and for contributing to the economic livelihood of stakeholders who seek to sustainably utilize renewable natural resources. Additionally, the restoration of native forest, including restoring connectivity of isolated patches, will improve and enlarge the habitat of forest-dependent endemic flora and fauna which represent Jamaica’s unique biological heritage.

Huertos Project: Ecological Bases of Sustainability in Reconstructed Tropical Ecosystems
Extensive deforestation and population growth have created a desperate need for both forest restoration and sustainable systems of land use in the humid tropical lowlands. Using nature as model, we work with the three most successful life forms in the humid tropics in an effort to understand the ecological underpinnings of sustainability. The experiments are of two kinds: one, designed to assess the role of diversity on sustainability, consists of tree plantations grown with and without two other successful life forms—a palm and a giant, long-lived herb; the other, designed to determine the impact of rotation frequency on sustainability, consists of tree plantations cut and replanted at intervals of one, four, and sixteen years.

Native Tree Restoration on Abandoned Lands in Costa Rica
The use of exotic tree species and monocultures in tropical reforestation efforts does not recognize the many ecological and economic values of using mixed stands of native tree species. Tropical Forestry Initiative is attempting to demonstrate that planting mixed stands of native trees can be a viable economic option for local landowners, as well as enhancing the ecological functioning of the restored ecosystems. Planting with mixed stands of native species is an exception rather than standard practice in Costa Rica.

Rainforest Restoration with Long-living Species in Los Tuxtlas, Mexico
A research project of Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and the University of Illinois at Chicago that aims to test the following hypotheses: (1) The range of variations in leaf traits of long-living tree species facilitates growth and survival under different ecological restoration scenarios, with pastures undergoing natural succession or arrested succession. (2) Those species with leaf traits related to high levels of light show greater survivorship and growth in pastures undergoing arrested succession (high levels of light for a long time). By using features easily measurable in the field, the growth and survival rate of late-successional species will determine the species that are best suited for restoration projects.

Restoration of Dry Tropical Forest in Northern Thailand
Tropical forest destruction represents a major risk for the seasonally dry forest of Southeast Asia’s highlands, with detrimental impacts such as the degradation of water catchments, the loss of biodiversity and the worsening of rural poverty. Despite levels of biodiversity, which often match those of many tropical rain forests, the seasonally dry tropical forests of Southeast Asia’s monsoonal belt are thought to be more endangered than equatorial rainforests.

Royal Society for the Protection of Bird’s Save the Sumatran Rainforest
Sumatra’s rainforests are so rich in wildlife that they are a global treasure. The forests are home to many rare, endangered bird species. Without action to conserve these forests, magnificent birds such as the rhinoceros hornbill, red-naped trogon, Storm’s stork and rufous-collared kingfisher will be pushed to the brink of extinction and may be lost altogether.

The Cloudbridge Project
The Cloudbridge Reserve Project aims to preserve and reforest an important gap in the cloud forest adjoining the Chirripó Pacifico river on the slopes of Mt Chirripó, the highest mountain in Costa Rica.

The Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve (Belize)
Originally, the reserve was declared to protect the natural pine forests from fire, grazing and cultivation and to secure natural regeneration. Other considerations were the management and conservation of the forest and the conservation of soil and water resources. In the 1970s, its nature conservation function was recognized, and in the contemporary management approach, designation also enables controlled access to important recreation sites. The Government of Belize recognizes a management principal, which combines economic benefit with preservation of the environment.

Tropical Dry Forest Restoration in the Guanacaste Conservation Area, Costa Rica
The two goals of the Guanacaste restoration project are: to connect islands of dry tropical forest in a sea of pastureland by restoring a native dry forest and to involve the Costa Rican people in Guanacaste National Park so that it becomes an invaluable part of their country.
